- Colin Thompson? We have reason to believe that on or around Wed, 24 Jan
- 96 you did type the following:
-
- > I've been experiencing a lot of delay's sending/receiving mail from a couple
- > of mates on Compu$erve, typically 5hrs + between posting/arriving.
- >
- > Is this common ?
-
- Yes. SMTP servers generally only wake up at intervals in order to send
- mail. The delay is caused by the message being passed from server machine
- to server machine, and the SMTP server on each machine waiting for its
- allocated time slot to come round. I think the usual figure is 15 minutes,
- but it's probably less for ISPs.
-
- > Can I do anything to speed it up ?
-
- Probably not.
-
- Putting a Precedence: header in might help, but it's unlikely. A lot of
- servers ignore them.
-
- Try
-
- Precedence: First-class
-
- and see.
